Sliced Face
for Verveeld en Verward
A face from stacked layers
For the interactive installation The Mini Ministry of the Future, fellow creators from Verveeld en Verward asked if I could craft a layered sculpture of a face. Lucky for them, I had just the right tool for the job. Using a parametric script that slices any 3D model into layers and preps the files for laser cutting, I got straight to work. Originally developed for cardboard lights, but in this case, perfect for a sculpture that quite literally looks ahead.
The prep work was a digital delight: the script generated the layers and added alignment markers to ensure everything fit together seamlessly. Then, the laser cutter got to do what it does best—patiently slicing numerous 9mm MDF shapes. The result: A stack of numbered layers, effortlessly coming together to form a human face that slowly but surely takes shape. A final coat of white paint, and the sculpture was ready to impress.
